Chapter Fourteen

“I thought vampires were allowed in Shadow Ridge.” Killian’s tension put me on edge. I still didn’t fully understand the rules of who could be where, and I’d avoided asking too many questions about vampires because that invoked more thoughts of Alex. But I wanted to know everything to an unhealthy level. I’d bitten my tongue way too many times to prevent myself from asking about them.

“All the supernaturals are allowed in town because of the university, but no one, not even another wolf shifter, is allowed to visit the woods behind another pack’s property without permission,” Rosemary said as she stood, towering over me. All of them were taller than me, with Sterlyn being the tallest girl but still shorter than the guys, Griffin having an inch or two on Killian. “Trespassing is rude, not to mention threatening around here. Everyone knows that.”

Sierra exhaled. “What have we told you about manners?”

“No, it’s fine.” She’d stated the obvious, and I felt dumb, but she had a point. “I like her that way.”

“Oh, dear God.” Sierra slumped. “Don’t encourage her.”

“Should we contact Alex?” Of course, at the first opportunity, I’d bring him up. “He’s the prince, after all. That has to mean something.”

“He’ll only get involved if he can gain something.” Rosemary sneered. “His parents were the same way and raised their kids to follow in their footsteps. Even Gwen has to make a point of telling Matthew everything she sees—especially in her classes—to gain more favor with him.”

Griffin untangled from Sterlyn and climbed to his feet. “Why don’t you guys stay here while Killian and I check things out?”

Sierra stuck her tongue out. “Aw, the big burly man is trying to take care of the wee womenfolk.”

“What if it’s a trap?” Sterlyn ignored her and shook her head. “I don’t think that’s smart. They might want us to split up and leave Ronnie exposed.”

“I agree with Sterlyn.” Rosemary crossed her arms. “We should stay together.”

“We can’t just stay here and hope they pass through.” Killian scowled. “They need to know we saw them sneaking around on our land even if they don’t plan to attack.”

Then it clicked. This group was used to facing danger together. My presence had complicated things.

“You’re overthinking it.” Rosemary dropped her arms. “Ronnie can go with us. I’ll keep an eye on her. If things go south, I’ll take her somewhere safe. But leaving her alone in the house isn’t an option, and neither is a handful of us running out there.”

“Whoa.” Sierra held out her arms. “Are the guards on their way? Isn’t this what they’re supposed to take care of?”

“First off, I’m the head of the guards, so I should go out there,” Killian said. “Besides, there’s only one on duty now that things have calmed down. I’ll order him to watch the tree line in case more vampires come.” Killian marched to the back door. “It’ll take a few minutes for the guards to get here, and it could be too late if we don’t get a move on.
